Originally trained as an HVAC technician, Mark began his career in the swimming pool and spa industry working for Jeffers Pool and Spas in Ukiah. When John Jeffers sold his retail store, Mark went to work at Sunshine Pool and Spa in Santa Rosa as their service manager and lead technician. In 2005, he started his own repair and service business: Blue Dolphin Pool and Spa. He was forced to close Blue Dolphin when he could no longer drive due to vision problems, and went into partnership with Dave Sperry to start Unlimited Spas and Saunas right here in Ukiah.
While working at Jeffers Spas and Pools, Mark attended his first factory train school through Dimension One Spas – an intensive program lasting 40 hours over 5 days. Since then, Mark has accumulated over 400 hours of additional factory training. He has attended training programs offered by most major spa manufacturers including Jacuzzi, Sundance, Watkins Mfg.(Hot Springs, Caldera & Tiger River), and Cal Spas. Mark’s factory spa training resume also includes the spa control system manufactures Gecko, Hydro Quip, and Balboa.
Mark has been a regular attendee at the West Coast Pool and Spa Expo in Monterey for over 10 years. At the Expo, Mark has attended factory training courses for RayPak, Hayward, Sta-Rite, and Pentair heaters, as well as Goldline, Pentair, and Sta-Rite automated controls. The West Coast Pool and Spa Expo always offers a wide variety of classes in pool equipment repair, pool surface and tile repairs, and energy efficiency which he always attends to learn what's new and trending in the industry.
Mark’s extensive list of contacts among fellow technicians, factory reps, and factory troubleshooting technicians helps him solve tough problems with older spas and pool equipment, and provide expert assistance on a wide range of questions.
Dave Sperry is a lifelong entrepreneur, born and raised in Ukiah. While in high school, Dave and a few friends were the students who started the Ukiah High School swim team in 1973. After earning a business degree in college, Dave returned to Ukiah to become the coach of the team he had started at Ukiah High School. Dave served as the team’s coach from 1980 to 1987, and retains friendships with many of his athletes and their parents today.
Dave also has an extensive history in banking, working for a total of 25 years at Mendocino Savings Bank and North Valley Bank in Ukiah. He started a sports bar in Ukiah called The Sports Attic in 1983, and later sold the business to his partner in the early 90s to start his own business placing vending machines in the Bay Area. In 2003, Dave entered the spa industry when he opened United Spas Ukiah. With his lifelong reputation for integrity in his hometown, his spa business quickly grew and thrived.
Dave and Mark met in 2008 when Dave needed a spa technician to help his customers and contacted Blue Dolphin Pool and Spa. For the next six years, Dave relied on Mark’s expertise on spas while Mark was grateful for the customers sent his way. In 2014, Mark found out he had a degenerative eye disease which prevented him from commuting to Santa Rosa, but he didn't want to stop working, so he proposed a partnership. In late 2014, Dave and Mark started Unlimited Spas and Saunas.
Like any good business partnership, this duo brings very different but complementary abilities. Dave's lifelong business experience keeps prices down as he constantly monitors prices and price changes across his suppliers. Mark’s 20 years of experience working on products in the field lets him view new products with a skeptical and experienced eye. Working with customers in the field has helped Mark learned not just how to explain what a customer needs to do, but to simplify the reasons why it should be done. Any pool spa store employee will rant at a customer to take care of their water – but Mark explains the why and how in a 3-minute explanation that sticks in the customer’s mind and simplifies the process.
Dave and Marks's strengths together are what brought them to sell Coast Spas. Mark had one iron clad rule: "Our spas must use Balboa controls." His time in the industry had shown him why Balboa Controls dominate the industry - the quality and reliability of Balboa is second to none. Mark appreciated that Coast used Waterway pumps and Waterways consumer-friendly jet technology as well. When Mark saw the spa shell construction methods and the lengths Coast Spas goes to assemble their spas to last for decades, he was sold. Dave researched Coast Spas as a business and was very impressed with the way they operate. Coast has been named one of the 50 best-managed Canadian businesses for 5 years running. They keep their costs down, keep their prices down, and have a very high employee retention rate, something rare in the pool and spa industry. When Dave learned of Coast Spas’ reputation for dealer and end-customer support he was sold as well. Mark and Dave together had already researched over 10 different spa brands and one or the other had always vetoed the brand being explored. When they both were excited at the broad product selection available, quality of equipment, and people involved at Coast Spas they stopped their search.
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours.
